My Favorite Kitchen Renovation Ideas

Beautifully renovated kitchen

Whether you’ve just secured the purchase of a home you adore with a kitchen that needs some extra love or are just hoping to upgrade the kitchen in your current home to make it feel more modern and fresh, there are many changes you can make, both big and small, that change the entire feel of the space. From a quick swap out of appliances to a full overhaul, the kitchen of your dreams is possible with a little bit of vision and a lot of determination.

You’ve probably already spent some time online trying to figure out the most popular kitchen renovation trends for the new year. There is a big difference between having a vision for what you want your kitchen to look like and having a solid plan on exactly what you need to change to get it there.

Whether you’re hoping for a small or extensive kitchen remodel ideas or just hoping to stumble across a bit more inspiration before you change up the most popular room in your home, I’ve got you covered.

Here are my 5 favorite ways to renovate your kitchen.

  1. Perform a facelift on your cabinetry

One of the biggest ways to make an immediate impact in your kitchen is to change up the way the cabinetry looks. If you love the layout but not the color or design, consider giving the exterior portion of your cabinets a quick facelift by choosing a neutral color that nicely accents the rest of the space. One of my favorite colors for kitchen cabinets is white. They are timeless and classic and act as the perfect backdrop for the rest of your kitchen’s design. Change out the handles to something more sleek and modern, and your space will feel brand new in no time at all.

If you’re looking for something more functional, especially in an older kitchen, consider removing the cabinetry completely and changing the layout of your kitchen by placing cabinets in areas that work best for you. Another great option is to replace existing cabinets with open shelving to give the area a more open and organic look.

  2. Transform the space with an open and airy feel

Nothing says chaos quite like extra clutter. One of the best and cheapest ways to transform your space is by nixing the excess clutter. Spend a day, or weekend, going through the entire kitchen and getting rid of anything you no longer need. From old appliances to extra paperwork on the island, toss anything that adds clutter to the space. To create a more open and fresh space, place smaller appliances in cabinets when not in use, leave countertops empty and clean, remove extra furniture from the space that makes it feel more closed in, and add a fresh bouquet and fresh fruit the island or main countertop.

Another great way to make a room feel more open is to focus on the natural light elements. For example, consider removing curtains from windows that let in ample light, or, if you want to take things a bit further, add a window above the sink for extra light and fresh air during the day.

A transformation doesn’t have to break the bank; it can involve a deep clean, and intentional organization to go from drab to open and airy.

  3. Go ceiling to floor

When redesigning your kitchen, remember that it’s a gathering space with a lot more than the stovetop and cabinets. So start at the ceiling and make your way to the floor with elements that make your space feel like home. Consider adding exposed beams to your ceilings for an extra wow factor and choosing cohesive flooring that accents the ceiling fixtures while playing into the overall theme of the space. Flooring can turn a simple kitchen into a work of art if you choose the suitable material and design. From classic hardwood floors to checkered black and white tile, the vibe the room exudes should match your entire aesthetic.

  4. Upgrade your appliances

Okay, this option feels like a no-brainer, but it’s often overlooked as a kitchen redesign option. Changing out your appliances gives your kitchen an instant refresh without requiring a lot of out-of-pocket expense. Consider upgrading your entire kitchen with appliances that match. The most timeless trend, which has been going on for years, is stainless steel everything, so opt for that to keep your kitchen new. Make sure your new appliances match one another as much as possible to keep your kitchen cohesive.

  5. Make it personal

Yes, a kitchen upgrade is an excellent option for the entire house, whether you plan to sell now or love your home forever. The most important thing about any renovation is to make it your own. You should choose elements that make you happier and make your life in the kitchen easier. For example, if you love baking, now is the perfect time to opt for a double oven. Or, if you adore a glass of decadent wine with dinner, why not add a wine fridge to your island? There are many ways to make a space that fits you, so don’t skimp on the elements that make the kitchen extra personal. After all, the kitchen is the heart of the home and will be used for years to come as a place to gather, enjoy and celebrate all of life’s everyday moments.

The bottom line here? Don’t worry too much about what’s popular in the world of renovations unless your reason for renovating has to do with the sale of your home. Instead, focus on exactly what you want and dream of in your ideal kitchen. What’s popular continually changes; what makes you happy and comfortable doesn’t. Remember to focus on timeless looks that easily translate with the new trends of the times and pick features and accents that make your everyday life more enjoyable and easier in the kitchen.
