My Top 5 Housewarming Party Tips

House warming party with 3 woman having a great time

‘Tis the season for a new house which means a celebration is in store by way of a housewarming party.

After all, what better way to celebrate your new home than having a party with all of your favorite people to share the new milestone?

With all the new chapters you may have opened this year, there is no greater accomplishment or feeling than turning a house you love into a home you’ve always wanted. And in my opinion, that calls for a celebration.

After you’re settled into your new place, consider hosting a housewarming party to share the space with your closest friends and family.

While there is no right or wrong way to host a party that brings you joy, there are some tried and true tips to consider when planning your party that I wanted to share with you today.

So, planning is key whether you plan to host a party this month or wait until after the new year.

Here are my top five housewarming tips for celebrating your new home:

  1. Make sure your space is complete and ready for guests.

This may feel like a no-brainer, but preparing your home ahead of time is crucial to hosting a successful and stress-free housewarming party.

Often new homeowners are so excited to show off their new home that they don’t spend enough time preparing it for guests, parties, or general visitors.

Although it’s exciting, don’t rush to throw a housewarming party. Instead, focus on getting your entire house in order from organization to design. There is no harm in waiting three to six months to host a housewarming party. In fact, it is an ideal time for many– guests included.

  2. Create a gift registry.

When we move into a new home, the cost of the move and the finances required to cover the house can be a lot for many of us to handle.

That’s where gifting comes in. Creating a gift registry for gifts and essentials for your new house is a great way to ask others for help in a way that meets your needs.

Friends and family want to bring gifts to your party, so why not give them options that you love instead of living with random home decor that you don’t?

Sure, registering for gifts may feel a little out of the norm, but it’s nothing to feel awkward or worried about. Those who want to shop off your registry will, and others may decide not to. Like baby and wedding showers, a registry is often considered helpful to the guests as they don’t have to scour out the latest and greatest items– they can simply log on and choose something they know you’ll love because you picked it.

Some of my favorite shops for housewarming registries include Target, Pottery Barn, and Wayfair.

Choose a store that fits your style and add all the items you need. Worst case scenario, you have a few things left that are usually available to you at a discount after your party is over.

  3. Compile a guest list and send out invitations ahead of time.

One of the most fun and essential aspects of party planning is knowing who is going. Still, timely preparation and invites are essential to add your party to the schedule.

Set your housewarming party date out about 3 to 4 weeks to allow your guests ample time to decide and respond.

Don’t overextend your space and means by inviting too many people. Instead, write out a list of everyone you’d like to invite then narrow it down to 20-30 people.

Pro tip: Include a link to your online registry with your invite so those who cannot attend can still purchase you a special gift for your new home.

  4. Narrow down food and drink choices and order ahead.

It is often the unspoken rule that good food is the life of the party— no matter what type of party you throw or attend.

With so many options available, deciding what to include on your housewarming spread can feel overwhelming.

From a Sunday brunch to an intimate dinner party, choose food and drink options that fit your style and meet your budget goals. If all else fails, order from your favorite local restaurant– it’s sure to be a big hit.

Other fun and delicious food and drink options include:

    • Appetizers and Wine
    • Finger Foods and Beer
    • A Wine and Cheese Tasting
    • Potluck
    • Desserts and Coffee
    • Tea time
    • Backyard Barbeque
  5. Share in the joy of sharing your new space.

The ultimate goal of your housewarming party should be to share the joy of your new home with the people you love most.

Whether you’re throwing a fancy black-tie dinner party or a casual backyard barbeque, sharing the moment and space with people who matter are most important, so don’t sweat the small stuff.

Housewarming parties should be uniquely you. Don’t stress over party etiquette or non-stop planning. Instead, focus on the aspects of the party that make you feel excited and happy about the party you’re about to host.

Use this time to create the first big memories in your new home.
