The Best New England Summer Vacation Ideas

Whether you’re a long-time New Englander or have recently relocated to Massachusetts or the Northeast, you may be trying to add some vacation plans to your summer must-visit list but aren’t sure where to go.

Local getaways are the perfect way to unplug close to home.

This summer, we encourage you to explore the beauty all around us. So, forget the airport security lines and boarding pass shuffle and take a closer look at all available right in your backyard.

From mouth-watering fresh-off-the-boat seafood and deep history to robust sports culture and refreshing weather, New England is the perfect place to enjoy the summer months and get away without going too far.

Here are my top 5 favorite local travel destinations:

  1. Boston, Massachusetts

The capital of Massachusetts and the largest city in New England, Boston is a true big city with a quaint small-town vibe.

Boston is a great spot to visit anytime with anyone on your list.

With options for families, couples, and singles alike, Boston is the perfect place to embrace all that New England is. From mouth-wateringly fresh seafood on the Seaport and a breezy harbor cruise to explore the sites to the historic Freedom Trail or the country’s oldest tavern, there is something to enjoy for all.

Families love spending a day at the aquarium, science museum, or even the Commons where you can enjoy a quick bite and plenty of outdoor play.

One of my favorite spots is Faneuil Hall. It’s the ideal place to connect with the true roots of Boston from the past to the present while enjoying all the shops and restaurants you can fit in.

If you’re a sports fan, consider spending a day catching a game at Fenway and cheering on the Sox while singing “Sweet Caroline” at the top of your lungs during the eighth inning.

  2. Cape Cod, Massachusetts

When we think of local vacation, we think of Cape Cod.

This classic Massachusetts peninsula is the perfect place to indulge in the picturesque vision of Massachusetts any time of year.

With over 40 miles of coastline, the Cape is the perfect place for the beach lover to soak up the sea.

Boasting everything from prime nightlife, top-tier restaurants, glorious art galleries, and historical museums, the small-town vibes throughout its six towns are elevated by a deep history of creativity, Cape pride, and New England love.

My favorite don’t-miss summer option? Whale-watching! Sign up for one of many whale-watching tours to enjoy the Cape from the ocean and get up close and personal with some of the sea’s most majestic creatures.

  3. Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts

Located 8 miles off the coast of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard is a popular tourist destination for New Englander and elite visitors alike. In fact, It has been known as a secluded summer destination for celebrities and politicians for years.

There is no bridge or tunnel access to the island. When you enter the island by ferry, you’ll soon realize how everyone runs on island time. The laid back vibe is unmatched.

If the Vineyard is on your list this summer, we encourage you to dig your toes in the sand on one of the many beaches or explore the six small towns throughout the island.

Before you depart, don’t forget to snap some photos in Oak Bluff with the gingerbread-style cottages as your backdrop.

Oh, and snag a Black Dog shirt for memories. It’s essential.

  4. Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire

The ideal spot for water sports and boat lovers alike, Lake Winnipesaukee, is the perfect spot to enjoy a summer getaway.

With over 40 communities around the lake, you can find just about anything you need for an ideal New England lake vacation.

From boat rentals and supplies to easy beach access, these small towns boast a big lake life mentality.

If you’re staying for a weekend, or even a week, forget the typical hotel stay and opt for a bed and breakfast- you won’t be disappointed.

I mean, who doesn’t love a breakfast buffet after a comfortable stay in a historical room?

My choice would be the 1810 house located on the property of the Winnipesaukee Winery. Rooms are devoted to New England charm with all the modern conveniences you could need.

  5. The Berkshires, Massachusetts

If you’re looking to explore a quintessential New England area this summer, look no further than the Berkshires. Filled with arts, culture, and a deep New England history, it has something for everyone to love, including picturesque summer sunsets.

Smack dab in Western Massachusetts, the Berkshires are made up of five towns: Lenox, Pittsfield, Great Barrington, Stockbridge, and Williamstown.

If you love live music and entertainment, head to Tanglewood in Lenox, were various bands and shows are playing all summer long. One great Tanglewood highlight is the summer residency of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Other must-visit attractions, especially for art fans, include the Norman Rockwell Museum and the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (Mass MoCA).
