With summertime in full swing, it can be hard to keep the long days fun, different, and enjoyable if you’ve already hit the beach and spent days by the pools. Although those options are on most of our summer to-do lists, some of our best summer moments can happen away from the ocean. In fact, a lot of fun can be had right in your backyard.
Sure, that may sound over the top, but honestly, there are many wonderful ways to enjoy the warmer season and longer days and nights at home.
While the beach is often synonymous with summer, and we can all agree that it is incredible to visit, especially if you head to the Cape, there are many other ways to enjoy a low-key summer at home.
So, grab some sunscreen, your favorite people, and a delicious fruity cocktail (umbrella included) or two, and walk out the back door to create your own summer oasis to enjoy for days and months.
Whether it’s your first summer in your new home or you’re looking for new ways to enjoy your long-time forever home this season, I’ve got you covered.
Here are my top 5 favorite ways to enjoy the outdoors at home this summer.
-
Put a twist on a regular summer barbeque by making it themed.
Grilling and chilling at a backyard barbeque is a summer pastime and, honestly, a whole warm weather vibe.
Whether you have a small deck or a large backyard and patio fit for entertaining, hosting a barbeque shouldn’t feel overcomplicated.
Invite your friends and family to enjoy a day of good food and meaningful conversation with some fun activities on the side.
To take some of the heat off you, consider asking each person to bring a dish, drink, or entertainment option to share with others. This way, you will all be in on the food and fun.
If you’re hoping to switch things up a bit, consider theming your barbeque and making it more of a themed party rather than a grill-centered afternoon. Some of my favorite themes include:
- Hawaiian luau
- By the sea
- Beer and BBQ
- Wine tasting
- Just appetizers
- Charcuterie board style
- Sports-themed (Red Sox or Patriots)
-
Have a backyard campout.
A night under the stars is suitable for people of all ages. It shouldn’t be reserved for children or require time spent in the deep woods. Let’s be honest, most of our homes are close enough to the wilderness anyway, especially if you reside in Western Massachusetts.
If you love the outdoors but don’t want to make a weekend of it, grab your tent, sleeping bags, s’mores necessities, and lanterns, and get ready for a night of camping in your own backyard.
Set up a bonfire or fire up the firepit and enjoy DIY s’mores and some cool drinks by the warm fire.
Keep it chill by only involving yourself and your household or make it an event by inviting family and friends.
-
Play outside.
Okay, I know this sounds like I am shoeing away a child who has told me they’re bored for the hundredth time this summer, but outdoor play can actually be fun for anyone at any age. Adults included.
Lawn games are a great happy medium to enjoy time outdoors without exerting too much energy and sweat under the warm summer sun.
Grab your favorite games, set out a cooler filled with snacks and drinks, invite your friends, and enjoy some friendly competition.
Some of my favorite go-to games include:
- Horseshoes
- Bocci
- Cornhole
- Ladder toss
-
Host a dinner party.
If you want a more low-key vibe for backyard fun this summer, consider hosting an outdoor dinner party.
Choose your favorite charcuterie boards and drink selection, and set the mood by hanging delicate string lights and summertime place settings. Crank your favorite tunes and share the moment with those you love.
Ask each guest to bring their favorite bottle of wine, case of beer, or appetizer, and enjoy a night of laughter and good company in the comforts and privacy of your own home.
The best part? You can party as long as you want, get free refills in your own kitchen, and head to bed once the party ends without needing ubers or extensive planning.
-
Splish, splash in the water.
When we think of summertime fun, most of the adventures that come to mind include water. From kayaking and paddle boarding to boating and swimming, the water sports in the summer months are endless.
Water is the perfect way to beat the heat and enjoy ourselves outdoors.
If you have backyard space, consider adding a few water features such as slip ‘n slides, small waterslides, sprinklers, or even an above-ground pool.
If you already have a pool, add some fun floats to enjoy as you spend most of your days outdoors with friends and family.
Summer vacations are great, but time spent at home is just as wonderful. Instead of packing the car and heading out of town, consider enjoying all your home offers you this summer.
